My Top 10 Favorite Psychological Horror Movies From the 21st Century
Psychological horror gets the audience in a place of visceral insanity without all the jumpscares and buckets of blood. Instead it makes you question everything and doubt your senses, along with the characters. Per request, here are my top 10 favorite psychological horror movies from this century.

10. A Dark Song (2016)
Most horror movies can be compared to other horror movies, but this is a unique film all its own. A slow, drama-filled buildup that constantly continues to rise all the way to the mind-mending climax. Great performances from the two main characters, a mesmerizing story, and an eerily haunting score.

"A determined young woman and a damaged occultist risk their lives and souls to perform a dangerous ritual that will grant them what they want."

9. Session 9 (2001)
With a brilliant premise, 'Session 9' is a slow grind of genuine atmospheric creepiness. Intelligent, well-written, and completely unpredictable. The "scares" are few and far between and the movie is obviously aimed at a certain type of horror fan, those who appreciate subtle and unnerving panic.

"Tensions rise within an asbestos cleaning crew as they work in an abandoned mental hospital with a horrific past that seems to be coming back."

8. Incident in a Ghostland (2018)
A well crafted, yet disturbing thriller from Pascal Laugier, the creator of 'Martyrs'. More violent than most psychological horror flicks and an intense ride through insanity and fear. A psychological roller coaster. Fantastic acting, cinematography, and most importantly a story that will have you questioning everything.

"A mother of two who inherits a house is confronted with murderous intruders on the first night in their new home and fights for her daughters' lives. Sixteen years later when the daughters reunite at the house, things get really strange."

7. Thelma (2017)
Brilliantly shot with a thought-provoking story, 'Thelma' is an original coming of age fantasy out of Norway. It crosses lines between reality and illusion, and explores the good and bad in human nature. Like other movies on the list, it's light on the horror but makes up for it with an intriguing yet creepy tale.

"A confused religious girl tries to deny her feelings for a female friend who's in love with her. This causes her suppressed subconsciously-controlled psychokinetic powers to reemerge with devastating results."

6. Gerald's Game (2017)
Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, 'Gerald's Game' is all about facing the demons of a tortured past. Discovering what is real and what is the result of a fractured psyche is what makes the story so twisted. A few gory and disturbing moments but an unforgettable psychological thriller at heart.

"While trying to spice up their marriage in their remote lake house, Jessie must fight to survive when her husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her handcuffed to their bed frame."

5. Hereditary (2018)
'Hereditary' caught a lot of shit when it first came out, mainly due to the fact is was called the scariest movie ever made and people were expecting something else. But what they got was a brilliant, slow paced movie, that does not pander to anything or operate on a jump scares. Another great A24 film.

"After the family matriarch passes away, a grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences, and begin to unravel dark secrets."

4. The Secret of Marrowbone (2017)
Best described as a horror drama, Marrowbone is never what it seems to be. A slow-burn, nonlinear story that still had me trying to put the pieces together an hour after watching it. With an amazing young cast, suspenseful story, and a lot of heart, this one is a near perfect, psychological masterpiece.

"A young man and his three younger siblings, who have kept secret the death of their beloved mother in order to remain together, are plagued by a sinister presence in the sprawling manor in which they live."

3. The Babadook (2014)
This film leans on the power of suggestion and tone to create a film with a strong sense of pure dread.
It is a tragic story and is not always easy to watch. The scares are not spoon fed to the audience, but if you like your horror served up with a side of insanity and symbolism, you'll probably be into this one.

"A widowed mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son's fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her."

2. Triangle (2009)
Easily one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Confusing at moments, remarkably brutal at others.
It messes with your mind from the very beginning, all the way to its provocative ending. This is definitely Melissa George's best performance in a movie that begs to be watched multiple times.

"A group of friends suffer a yachting accident and take refuge on a cruise drifting on the open sea, but quickly realize they were better off on the upturned yacht"

1. It Follows (2014)
One of the best indie films of the last decade and a modern horror classic. Beautifully shot and filled with subtle symbolism dealing with intimacy, abuse, and STDs. It is a refreshing psychological horror film with a simple premise that is not overly violent yet truly disturbing. With a budget of only a million dollars, an unknown cast, a first time director, and a one of a kind story, this is EXACTLY how an indie horror movie should be made.

"A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter."
